Cinematheque Series Flips the Script on Film Musicals

The Cinematheque launches a new series on film musicals by essentially asking – what is a film musical? A narrow definition of the genre might zero in on classicHollywood fare, but in “Who Will Sing Folk Songs”: The Film Musical in Nine Variations, The Cinematheque takes audiences outside the conceptual box to explore a wide range of viewing options. Taiwanese Second New Wave director Tsai Ming-liang’s 1998 film, The Hole, opens the series on Thursday, May 23 at 6:30 p.m. with its apocalyptic vision accompanied by the recordings of 1950s Hong Kong pop star Grace Chang. Other films in the series include Lars von Trier’s Dancer in the Dark and Chantal Akerman’s Golden Eighties. For more information and schedule of screenings visit The Cinematheque website.
