The Polygon Gallery in North Vancouver is currently showcasing an exhibit in tribute to the late Diane Evans, a revered photographer and educator. Evans, whose career at the arts centre began in 1987, when it was the Presentation House Gallery, served as its manager until her passing last summer. A Vancouver School of Art graduate, she taught photography for many years at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Evans began the PHG bookstore, seamlessly transitioning it to the Polygon with the gallery’s move to its new waterfront location at Lonsdale Quay in 2017. The Polygon, known for its deep community roots and international acclaim, credits Evans for her unparalleled passion, dedication, and profound impact on the arts organization. Her work, celebrated for its diverse use of cameras and photographic techniques, will be on display until Feb. 25.

Madonna Celebrates at Rogers Arena (Feb. 21)

Only The Beatles, Elvis Presley, and Michael Jackson have sold more records than Madonna. The ‘Queen of Pop’ is celebrating four decades of music-making with her first retrospective tour, including a date in Vancouver at Rogers Arena on Feb. 21. In developing the setlist for the Celebration Tour, which began last fall in London, Madonna asked fans on social media what their favourite tracks were. Several of the songs included in the two-hour-plus concert, such as “Justify My Love” (written with Lenny Kravitz and Ingrid Chavez), the Bond theme, “Die Another Day,” and the True Blue ballad “Live to Tell,” have not been performed live in decades. Go to the Rogers Arena website for tickets.

Oscar Shorts Get Their Due On Screen at VIFF Centre (until March 9)

For those completists who want to see everything that has been nominated before the Academy Awards broadcast on Sunday, March 10, the VIFF Centre is giving you a chance to see all the live-actiondocumentary, and animated short films in the running. Five films are nominated in each of the three categories, and over the next two weeks, all 15 films will be shown several times. Canada’s only entry in the short film categories is “Invincible,” a live-action piece by Québec filmmaker Vincent René-Lortie. It’s up against some formidable competition, including Wes Anderson’s ‘mini-masterpiece,’ “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role. Screenings are scheduled for different times of the day over the next two weeks. Go to the Vancouver International Film Festival website to book tickets.
