Harmony Arts Festival Hosting Indigenous Fashion Show on Ambleside Pier (Aug. 8)
The Harmony Arts Festival showcases the work of Indigenous fashion designer Himikalas Pamela Baker in a runway fashion show at Ambleside Pier on Thursday, Aug. 8 at 6 p.m. While much of her work has been inspired by her mother’s Kwakwaka’wakw and great-great-grandmother’s Tlingit heritage, Baker’s latest collection focuses on her paternal Squamish Nation ancestry. Tickets for the show are $35 (general admission)/$25 (elders). A collection of dresses and evening wear are also currently on view at Harmony Arts in a free exhibit at the Ferry Building Gallery – Himikalas Pamela Baker: Touch of Culture: Spirit of the West Coast runs through Sept. 1. The one-of-a-kind pieces illustrate some of the designer’s innovative techniques, including laser cutting and sublimation, that are used in combining traditional and modern elements. Earlier this year, Baker was named the first Indigenous designer-in-residence at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Wilson School of Design.
