Track of the Day:
Las Cafeteras – “Cumbia de Mi Barrio”

“Cumbia de Mi Barrio” is the opening track on Las Cafeteras new album, A Night in Nepantla, released today and available in colour vinyl, signed copies and cassette formats.

East L.A.’s Las Cafeteras fuse Afro-Mexican rhythms with contemporary styles such as hip-hop, Spanglish pop, spoken word, R&B, funk, punk, and rock. Over the years the Chicano band have developed a songbook featuring covers such as Rosie and the Originals “Angel Baby” alongside new material like “Oaxaca Love Song No. 2” without missing a jarana beat.

Las Cafeteras’ music and videos are authentic cultural artifacts and wonderful works of art but to get the full experience you really need to catch them live – on Saturday, May 11 at 8 p.m. they are performing at the Rickshaw Theatre in Vancouver as part of a Global Roots co-production with @blueshoreatcapu. San Pedro Cinco opens. Tickets are $30 plus service charges (on the Rickshaw website or $40 cash only at the door). Come for the zapateado footwork and stay for the son jarocho fandangos.
