Colin James Frees Up Some Quality Time for His Little Big Band

Colin James

Fresh off the road from touring with Buddy Guy, Colin James celebrates the 30th anniversary of his Little Big Band with a two-night stand at the Commodore Ballroom this weekend. “Discovered” one night in Saskatoon by blues icon Stevie Ray Vaughan, James has never really looked back on a stellar music career built on a love of the blues.

The Little Big Band might have felt like a side gig when he started recording an album of jump blues classics at Little Mountain Sound back in the day, but the music’s success could not be ignored. Over the years, James has added four Little Big Band albums to his catalog, with dozens of rocking R&B swing tunes available for this weekend’s shows.

One of the logistical problems encountered in playing with a big band is keeping everybody together for any length of time. The two Commodore shows on the weekend will be a rare chance to see Colin James and the Little Big Band perform live. Tickets are still available for the Friday night show, but Saturday’s is sold out. Doors open at 7 p.m., the show follows at 8 p.m.

Como Taperia Takes Diners on a Tapas Adventure

During Dine Out Vancouver, Mount Pleasant tapas bar and restaurant Como Taperia is introducing Vancouverites to some of their favourite food destinations in Spain with special weekly menus. This week, they highlight the best tapas bars in Madrid and Barcelona with a seven-course “Taste Our Travels” menu.

The Taperia team did some culinary reconnaissance in Spain last November to come up with their choices, which include Quimet y Quimet, El Xampanyet, La Cova Fumada and LLuritu in Barcelona, and Sala de Despiece, Restaurant Sacha, Casa Toni and Street XO in Madrid. Each dish is prepared for two people and is meant to be shared. Seatings are sold out for this coming weekend, but tickets are still available during the week. To reserve seats and check out what’s on the menu, visit the Como Taperia website.

Coast Salish Weavers Weave their Magic at Vancouver Art Gallery

One of the Vancouver Art Gallery’s current exhibitions, “Rooted Here: Woven from the Land,” brings together the work of four Coast Salish weavers who have been instrumental in reviving the traditional art form. Debra Sparrow, Willard “Buddy” Joseph, Siyam’ Janice George, and Angela George have all been at the forefront of the cultural revitalization of a unique style of Indigenous weaving that was lost and forgotten for much of the 20th century.

New generations of weavers have used clues from the past to rebuild an art form that was an important part of their culture for thousands of years. The exterior design of the new Vancouver Art Gallery building includes a copper-colored metal weave facade that is inspired by traditional weaving practices. The four Indigenous artists in the current show met regularly with project architects as consultants on the exterior of the building set for completion in 2028.
