Sushi Masuda has joined the ranks of Vancouver’s Michelin-starred restaurants, bringing the city’s total to 10 one-star establishments in the 2024 Michelin Guide. The announcement was made during a special Michelin evening at the Commodore Ballroom on Oct. 3. Chef Yoji Masuda, a Vancouver native, spent over a decade honing his skills in Japan before returning home to open his own restaurant at 1066 West Hastings in March 2024. The menu follows an omakase sushi concept, featuring four to five appetizers, 10 to 12 pieces of sushi, and a soup. In addition to Sushi Masuda’s recognition, the Michelin Guide awarded Gary’s (French cuisine), at 1485 West 12th Avenue, a Bib Gourmand designation, which highlights restaurants offering excellent food at great value. During the event, four special awards were presented: Chef Yoji Masuda earned the Young Chef Award, Gary’s Bailey Hayward received the Outstanding Service Award, AnnaLena’s Reverie Beall picked up the Sommelier Award, and Kissa Tanto’s Fraser Crawford was honoured with the Exceptional Cocktails Award. The 2024 Vancouver Michelin Guide now includes 10 one-star restaurants, 16 Bib Gourmand locations, and 50 recommended establishments.
