Onigiri Ya Opens on Broadway with Grab-and-Go Japanese Rice Balls
Onigiri (“hand-formed”) rice balls have become a global sensation. How Japan’s humble onigiri took over lunchtimes around the world involves changing eating habits and the exquisite simplicity of the dish made of rice, salt, crisp nori seaweed and a topping. A new grab-and-go restaurant, Onigiri Ya, officially opened for business in Vancouver on Sept. 3. Microwaveable single-serving packages of fresh Japanese rice balls are made every morning. Open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Broadway and Cambie fast food eatery is also preparing to add weekend hours.
