The New York Times describes photographer Martine Gutierrez as “an artist, performer and provocateur.” The Polygon Gallery is featuring the work of the transdisciplinary artist in a new exhibition, Anti-Icon: Apokalypsis – 17 self-portraits in which Gutierrez references historical heroines through a critical, modernist lens that deconstructs the visual lineages of each subject. Initiated as a Public Art Fund project in the U.S., 10 of her images of powerful iconic women (including Cleopatra, Aphrodite, Godiva, and Sheba) were installed in 300 bus shelters in New York City, Chicago, and Boston. Tonight at the Polygon, Gutierrez will be featured in an Artist Talk with Anti-Icon: Apokalypsis curator Elliott Ramsey at 7 p.m. Admission is by donation. The show runs until Sept. 29.
