Savor the Flavors at Dine Out Vancouver

Canada’s largest food and drink festival, Dine Out Vancouver Festival 2024, kicks off this week with hundreds of chefs and more than 300 restaurants participating in the 19-day event running from Jan. 17 to Feb. 4. Festival sponsors Destination Vancouver estimates that over 125 different food traditions contribute to the city’s unique flavor profiles. Much of this cultural cornucopia will be on display in the annual feast. Some of the events run daily throughout the festival, while others are exclusive to specific dates. Highlights from the first week of the festival include:

There’s even a festival-within-a-festival as Street Food City food carts take over the Vancouver Art Gallery’s šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl’e7énk Square for nine days from Jan. 20 to 28. For more information and to reserve your place at specific events, go to dineoutvancouver.com/events

Vancouver Canucks Return Home

Returning home after an epic seven-game road trip that saw them solidify their place at the top of the Pacific Division of the NHL’s Western Conference, the Canucks host the not-so-bad themselves Arizona Coyotes at Rogers Arena on Thursday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. Then on the weekend the Toronto Maple Leafs are in town for a Saturday night clash against the Canucks, starting at 4 p.m. Along with the Canucks’ dominant play, North Vancouver-born Martin Jones giving the Leafs consistent goaltending has to be one of this season’s great success stories so far.

Virtual Reality Adventure Journeys Through Space

Space Explorers: The Infinite is an hour-long virtual-reality immersive experience based on NASA missions. The show uses 360-degree video to take the audience aboard the International Space Station. Children aged 8 to 12 must be accompanied by an adult and need to have a waiver signed by their guardian to participate in the experience. Children under the age of 8 are not admitted due to VR manufacturer recommendations. The show runs until Feb. 19 at Rocky Mountaineer Station, 1755 Cottrell St., Vancouver. Tickets start at $35 for adults, $30/$25 for students and children.

PuSh Festival Launches New Season

Vancouver’s unique performing arts festival, PuSh, begins on Jan. 18 and runs through Feb. 4. The annual event showcases international and local artists at various venues around Vancouver and online. This year’s schedule includes the Théâtre la Seizième production, “L’Amour telle une cathédrale ensevelie,” at SFU’s Goldcorp Centre for the Arts on Feb. 3-4. The opera-theatre piece explores the experiences of exiled Haitian families and features a Creole and French chorus. For a complete listing of events, go to pushfestival.ca.

Hidden Gem: BlueShore at CapU Hosts Band of Brothers

It’s no secret that both Capilano University’s BlueShore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts and Vancouver’s Rickshaw Theatre consistently present excellent programming year-round. But this week, they’ve gone above and beyond and joined forces to bring in a legendary group of musicians, Band of Brothers: Levin and La Barbera, for a CapU Jazz Series concert. Between them, the four musicians (Tony Levin – bass, Pete Levin – keyboards, Pat La Barbera – sax, and Joe La Barbera – drums) have performed live and on record with the likes of John Lennon, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, Paul Simon, Dire Straits, Annie Lennox, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Charles Mingus, Wayne Shorter, Bill Evans, David Bowie, Buddy Rich, Art Pepper, and Rod Stewart to name just a few. Together, the two sets of brothers are returning to their jazz roots for a series of live West Coast shows, including a gig on Friday, Jan. 19, at 7:30 p.m. at the BlueShore at CapU in North Vancouver.
