The Radio Grande Unwrap New Tunes at Seymour’s Pub (June 21)
The Radio Grande recorded their debut album back in 2020 as a trio featuring Tom Taylor, Wendy Bird, and Colin Nairne. “Town and Country” is an Americana/alt-country gem that shares some stylistic similarities with another great Vancouver band, The Blue Shadows, featuring Billy Cowsill and Jeffrey Hatcher. Individually, The Radio Grande members have worked with the likes of Elvis Costello, Ry Cooder, Barney Bentall, Shari Ulrich, Craig Northey, Colin James, Lost Durangos, The Blue Shadows, the High Bar Gang, She Stole My Beer, and many others. Together, they find common ground mixing cherished songs from other musicians (such as Richard Thompson and Lee Ann Womack) with their own original material. “Town and Country” nailed the dynamic of the band’s sound, rooted in Americana but keeping things open with plenty of options. The North Shore band switches things up from song to song with Taylor and Bird trading off on lead vocals and harmonizing, while all three can play guitar. Since their debut, they’ve grown to five with the addition of a fine rhythm section featuring David Hughes (from She Stole My Beer) on drums and Alli Lyde-Stad on bass. The Radio Grande really comes alive in a club where their music builds momentum through the night. Friday night they celebrate the release of their new EP, “Wrapped in Plastic,” with a show at Seymour’s Pub in North Vancouver. The pub will have Game 6 of the Oilers/Panthers Stanley Cup Finals up on TV screens with The Radio Grande’s first set starting after the game is over, around 8:30 p.m. Get there early but stay late.
