❤️ 14 music events | Scott McGillivray | New watering hole – February 6, 2024
Hey, all, here’s a rundown of this week’s must-sees and must-dos, plus Live Event Listings.
Juliet: A Revenge Comedy Flips the Script at The Cultch (Feb. 8 to 18)
There are several theories as to why women didn’t appear in Shakespeare’s plays back in Shakespeare’s time, but Monster Theatre gets a chance to correct all that with their current production of “Juliet: A Revenge Comedy.” Opening this week at The Cultch Historic Theatre, the play, written by Pippa Mackie and Ryan Gladstone, asks the question, ‘What if Juliet didn’t kill herself?’.
Juliet (played by Lili Beaudoin) enlists some of the Bard’s most famous women characters, including Lady Macbeth and Ophelia (all played by Jessie Award-winner Carly Pokoradi), in comically exploring the misguided logic of the ‘star-crossed lovers’ in the romantic tragedy “Romeo and Juliet.” A preview is set for Feb.8, with the production’s official opening night slated for Feb. 9.
City and Colour Performing at Rogers Arena (Feb. 8)
Talk about appealing to different demographics. Musician Dallas Green regularly switches personas between post-hardcore noisemakers Alexisonfire, the Americana duo You+Me (with Pink), and the electric bedsit soul project known as City and Colour (City=Dallas, Colour=Green).
This Thursday, he brings the latter band to Rogers Arena as part of a tour in support of his latest album, “The Love Still Held Me Near.” What started out as an exploration of a more intimate side of Green’s music has become massively popular, necessitating things like the current cross-Canada arena tour.

New Neighbourhood Watering Hole: The Flamingo Room
A new Miami-inspired venue and watering hole, The Flamingo Room, has opened on Commercial Drive. Located next to Havana Vancouver, the venue promises “a fusion of fun drinks, late night snacks, and a groovy vibe brought to life with music, comedy & more.”
The impressive menu is full of snacks created from a world of Latin flavours, such as Highlands Style Guac (Jalisco-inspired dish with jalapeño vinegar, orange, pickled serranos, corn tortilla, and plantain chips) accompanied by signature drinks, such as the “Rumbustion” (Havana 7 year, Gosling’s Blackstrap, honey and ginger syrup, lime, coconut water, soursop, and Cherry Heering float).
