‘Song From the Uproar’ Inspired by Exploits of Woman Explorer (until March 3)
This weekend, Vancouver City Opera presents Missy Mazzoli’s ”Song from the Uproar,” a one-act opera based on the life of Swiss explorer/author Isabelle Eberhardt. Considered a masterpiece of contemporary opera, the work was inspired by the 19th-century North African adventures Eberhardt recounted in her journals.
The production, featuring mezzo-soprano Marion Newman, has performances remaining on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon at the historic York Theatre. Mazzoli was recently featured at the Winnipeg New Music Festival, with the New York Times calling her “one of the more consistently inventive, surprising composers now working in New York.”
