😡 Taxpayers paying for trips to the Junos? | BINGO | What’s happening…
Hey, all. Here are some absolute must-sees and must-dos, interesting stories in the news, new BINGO call-out plus Live Event Listings for Vancouver.
Justin Adams and Mauro Durante Stir Up Global Roots (Feb. 28)
Although connected to wildly different traditions, English musician Justin Adams and Southern Italian violinist/frame drum percussionist Mauro Durante have found common ground as a duo. Adams is used to working with rock gods and desert nomads (such as Robert Plant and North African legends Tinariwen and Rachid Taha), while Durante is known as an expert in Southern Italian folklore. Together, they’ve created a sound that’s as singular as their musical backgrounds. Their debut album, “Still Moving,” snagged the Best Fusion Artists award from Songlines Magazine in 2022. This Wednesday night, Adams and Durante take the stage at Capilano University in North Vancouver to perform their version of a punky Mediterranean desert blues party as part of the ongoing CapU Global Roots Series.
Freewheeling Adventures on Tap at BC Bike Show (March 2-3)
For those who prefer their adventures on two wheels, this is your nirvana. This weekend, the Vancouver Convention Centre becomes the epicentre of the cycling and adventure travel world, courtesy of Canadian and global exhibitors. Scheduled events at the BC Bike Show include an outdoor demo track where attendees can ride a range of bikes with the latest technology, Big Air Jump Jam sessions featuring some of the best free riders around, as well as many other activities ideal for cycling enthusiasts. The Outdoor Adventure and Travel Show, running concurrently, will showcase outdoor gear and adventure travel experiences from over 250 exhibitors on site.
Art on the House in Free Friday Nights at Vancouver Art Gallery (March 1)
On the first Friday of every month, the Vancouver Art Gallery throws open its doors for a night of free culture and art from 4 to 8 p.m. Immerse yourself in a diverse range of exhibits, including the work of a Group of Seven member (“J.E.H. MacDonald: A Tangled Garden“), the unique heritage of Coast Salish weaving (“Rooted Here: Woven from the Land“), the vibrant oeuvre of Trinidad-Canadian artist Denyse Thomasos(“just beyond“), and the world of Emily Carr (“A Room of Her Own“). Make sure to book tickets online in advance, as they are limited to two per group due to popular demand. Youth under 18 are always on the house.
California Dreaming; The Pipe Shop Hosting Wine Mingler (Feb. 28)
As part of this week’s Vancouver International Wine Festival, 10 California wineries are hosting a mingler at the Pipe Shop in the Shipyards at North Vancouver’s Lonsdale Quay on Wednesday, Feb. 28, from 7 to 9 p.m. “California Wines Sun Fest” features 20 different wines (two from each winery participating) paired with appetizers in a sip-and-socialize setting. Interestingly, Napa Valley’s TRIM Wines focuses on producing only two wines – one Chardonnay and one Cabernet – and both will be at the Pipe Shop. Tickets are $69 per person.

Recent Stories in the News…
More specifically, stories I find interesting without wading into the deeply politcal.
1) Seth Rogan’s Vancouver Yaletown loft is listed for sale ($2.3 mil). It’s awesome. See it here.
2) UBC student saves $1,300 per month flying to UBC for classes. Granted, he’s able to save because he lives with his parents in Calgary. Still… read the story here.
3) Who are these people? A Vancouver City councillor actually expected taxpayers to pay his way to the Junos? What possible good reason could there be for taxpayers to fund that?
I’m of the view it’s a joke taxpayers are paying for the Mayor to attend. He claims it’s a fact-finding mission for when Vancouver hosts next year. Do you need to go to find out how to host? In reality, the City will hire people to put it on… I doubt Mayor Sim will be involved. Read the story here.
4) B.C. lawyer files a motion that quotes and relies on fake cases courtesy of A.I. When this happened early on with A.I. in the U.S. I gave the lawyer the benefit of the doubt. After all, there’s a first for everything.
It’s since happened multiple times. Now B.C. has its own such case. I’m sure her clients are delighted. Read about it here.
5) Kellogg’s CEO, Gary Pilnick, makes approx. $5 mil per year. That’s USD, so a whole lot more loonies. On February 21 of this year, he suggested that folks struggling financially could save money by eating cereal for dinner.
Let’s just say he’s taking a shellacking for those comments. It’s not the first time Kellogg’s thought it a worthy message. Check out the ridiculous “Cereal for dinner” ad.
6) North Shore finalizing plans for a continuous Spirit Trail connecting Horseshoe Bay and Deep Cove. Not only is this great for North Shore folks, but it’ll make for a worthy outdoor destination for walking and cycling. Get more details here.
