Vancouver’s Shakespearean summertime staple, Bard on the Beach, gets underway next week with the opening of two productions on the BMO Mainstage in Vanier Park: Twelfth Night on June 11, and Hamlet on June 13. The Comedy of Errors will enter the run on July 2 with Measure for Measure coming on board July 4. All four productions will continue into the third week of September on select dates. The romantic comedy Twelfth Night, adapted and directed by Diana Donnelly, features original music from local musician Veda Hille added to Shakespeare’s poetry and chaos. The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, adapted and directed by Stephen Drover, stars Nadeem Phillip Umar Khitab (until Sept. 1) and Chirag Naik (from Sept. 2) in the titular role. The Comedy of Errors, adapted by Rebecca Northan with Bruce Horak, and directed by Northan doubles down on Shakespeare’s love of pitting twins against the world to see what happens. Measure for Measure, adapted and directed by Jivesh Parasram, takes audiences to no-fun Vienna where morality laws clear the dance floors.
