❤️ 13 live events | New restaurant | Stand-up comedy | kids art workshop…
Hey all, here’s what’s going on this weekend, including comedian Brent Butt at Kay Meek, Kids First workshops at Polygon, and a Lunar New Year Market at UBC, plus Live Event Listings.
Brent Butt Performing Stand-Up at Kay Meek (Feb.3, 7:30 p.m.)
Brent Butt, creator and star of the hit Canadian sitcom, “Corner Gas,” brings his stand-up comedy act to West Vancouver’s Kay Meek Arts Centre on Saturday. Still watched in reruns, “Corner Gas” is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
Butt is also the author of a new thriller novel, “HUGE,” which follows three comedians on a darkly comic tour of rural Canada. Copies of the national bestseller can be purchased with tickets which Butt will personally autograph at the Kay Meek show. Juno Award-winning comic Jacob Samuel, known for his work on “The Debaters” and live TV appearances, will perform an opening set. Visit Kay Meek’s website for more info and to reserve your seats.
Kids Create Ink Wash Paintings in Polygon Workshops (Feb. 3 and 4)
North Vancouver’s Polygon gallery hosts Kids First workshops on the first Saturday and Sunday of each month. The art sessions enable families to work together on special projects based on exhibitions currently on view in the gallery. In February, the focus will be on the “Diane Evans and Sunlight” exhibit.
Refracted light was something near and dear to the work of photographer Diane Evans, who taught at Emily Carr and worked at Presentation House/Polygon for many years. Inspired by Evans’ photographs, children in the workshops will trace “shadows in low light to create dreamy ink wash paintings.” The monthly KIds First sessions are designed for children between the ages of five and 12 years old, although there is no strict age requirement. All participants must be accompanied by an adult.
Admission is by donation, and advance registration is recommended to help the gallery plan ahead. “Diane Evans and Sunlight” is on view until Feb. 25 in the Polygon’s ground-floor gallery.
UBC Botanical Garden Hosting Lunar New Year Market (Feb. 3 and 4)
For the second year in a row, UBC Botanical Garden is hosting a Lunar New Year Market to celebrate the Year of the Dragon. This year, the weekend event will feature over 40 local makers, artists, crafters, and food trucks. Several hands-on workshops are scheduled, including the basics of calligraphy, making sweet dumpling desserts, and light engraving sessions.
Admission tickets are required for the workshops. Food trucks on site will include Tokyo Katsu Sand, Shameless Buns, Nami Vietnamese, and Tatchan Noodles. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For more information and a list of participating vendors, visit the UBC Botanical Garden website.
New Restaurant in Town: Bar Haifa Mixes It Up
Named after the ancient port city of Haifa in northern Israel, the newly-opened Middle Eastern restaurant Bar Haifa is operated by close friends from both Palestinian and Jewish backgrounds: Fadi Hakim, Waseem Dabdoub, Mark Kupfert, Yossi Misrachi Eastwood and Daniel Suss.
The Vancouver location (410 W Georgia St., on the ground floor of the Deloitte Summit building) is the second restaurant the group has put together after the debut of the Haifa Room in Toronto in 2021. Chef Jason Hemi will cook right in front of you at the chef’s table from an extensive dinner menu that includes items such as Nazareth Hot Chicken, Boneless Lamb Shoulder, Kibbeh Nayyeh Lamb Tartare, and Jerusalem Artichoke ‘Karaage.’
For $75 per person, the chef will also create a customized feast for an entire table. Bar Haifa is open for lunch and dinner Monday to Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
